Pat Conroy, R. I. P.

Post and Courier: Pat Conroy, the best-selling novelist and proud adoptive son of the Lowcountry who wrote lyrically about Charleston and unflinchingly about The Citadel, died Friday. He was 70.

I just read that. I had no idea. I liked several of his books a lot.

RIP

Like Jeff, I've read several of Conroy's books. A talented writer dying too soon.

Read Conroy in the 1980s, but did not catch up with THE WATER IS WIDE, based on his time teaching on an isolated island off the Carolina coast, until late last year. Good book.

Haven't read that book. Saw the movie, though, long ago.

There was a second movie version, made for television I think, that was somewhat closer to the book than the Jon Voight version.

It was a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie starring Jeff Hephneras Conroy, and Alfre Woodard.

Didn't see that one. Liked CONRACK, though.

They filmed CONRACK (at least part of it) in a rural area of Georgia somewhat inland from the coast. One of the girls a year behind me in high school played Viola (one of the students) in the movie. At least through the late seventies, the old schoolhouse set was still standing and every once in a while we'd drive out there. The whole area has been developed now.

Sad that such a writer is gone, but joyful that such a writer was here!

Really enjoyed his short memoir: My Reading Life. (2010)
