When I was a boy, every year, about two weeks before Christmas, Dad, Mom, brother and I would all bundle into the car and drive to downtown L.A. to look at the Christmas windows, and for my parents to do a little shopping. All the large department stores had Christmas window displays, including toys, books, clothing, and the usual Santa & elves set-up. We also got to walk through the always crowded toy department at Bullock's Wilshire and gaze at the best and latest. While that was wonderful, my favorite holiday trip was to the Whittier Bookstore. They had two large windows with displays of the latest books, plus coffee table books, children's books and seasonal things. Even at the age of 6 or 7 it was the books that drew me in.

Somehow looking in windows at a mall just isn't the same.
