I'm not sure he intended this one in the way we might read it today:
“There are many harsh lessons to be learned from the gambling experience, but the harshest one of all is the difference between having Fun and being Smart.”

And I do not believe this is true (and I'm sure the Buddha would agree with me):
“For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled.”

But did you and the Buddha have as much fun as Hunter S. Thompson?

I've had a lot of fun; I can't speak for the Buddha.

I suspect no matter how much "fun" Thompson had, he rarely remembered it.

Years ago I was to meet Hunter at his favorite haunt in Woody Creek. He was incoherent on the phone and never showed. I was greatly disappointed as I am a big admirer of his writing style.

The first book I ever read by him was the one about the Hell's Angels. I read a lot of his stuff in Rolling Stone after that.
