Yeah, #'s 1,5, and 6 are just plain wrong.

1. Who are these people? And what are they doing on my lawn?
2. All this shows is how standards and tastes have deteriorated in the last 50 years.
3. I must say, some of the people they are holding up as the "good" side of the comparisons may be better than the "bad" but it doesn't make them The Beatles.

Oh, leave me alone. I'm going to lie down.

I couldn't agree more, Jeff. And I think I'll take a nap, too.

News flash whippersnappers--there's always been crappy music and there will always be youngsters (and, ahem, perhaps those not so young) willing to pay for it.

/Leaves to fish out that old Bobby Sherman record.

"Julie, Julie, Julie, do you love me?"

I think I speak for everyone when I say 1978 was the best year for pop music ever.

Deb said...

Anders--You certainly speak for Disco Dolly Deb when you say that!

Hm, disco. Deb - it is possible we think of different 1978s. This UK hit single is the sound of my youth:

(note that the narrative would make for a pretty good short story)

You know what the say about SF: The Golden Age of science fiction is 13. I think that applies to pop music, too, although 15 might be closer to it in my case.

Bill, you may be onto something here. 1978 was indeed the year I turned 15. Alas, so much wonderful British noise from that year...

"Teenage Kicks" by the Undertones is one I like a lot. That was '78, right?

Anders E said...

"Teenage Kicks" was indeed 1978. My sister owns the original vinyl issue on the indie Good Vibrations label. That's one way to feel old, I guess - you suddenly realize old records you bought way back when are collector's items.

Scott Cupp gave me a couple of tapes with a lot of stuff from around that time. I really like Feargal Sharkey and the Undertones. Some of the others are a lot of fun, too.

Bill, I love your (only slightly older) stuff too. Buddy Holly is one of the great Texans. But 1978 is MY big year.

One of the best things of 1978 and indeed one of Scotland's finest ever were The Rezillos. If the Scots had decided to go independent I'd say this could have been their national anthem.

Trivia: guitar player Jo Callis later joined The Human League and wrote the music for "Don't You Want Me".

Wow. That's pure '70s, all right. The woman must have had a recent caffeine injection.

Bill, your "13" line certainly jibes with my choice as "best year" for music: 1961.

Precious little from after 1975 is worth hearing, IMHO.

I'm almost ashamed to admit I really like that "All About That Bass" song.

I don't hate it.
