My Boy Lollypop was the first ska-influenced song to make the charts. Millie Small was, I believe, either originally from Jamaica or of Jamaican ancestry.

Deb, You're right about Millie Small being Jamaican. According to Wikipedia she was the daughter of a sugar plantation overseer.
