I just read this a few months back. A great use of geography and claustrophobia, with the snow storm and the mountains weighing down of our protagonist. A great winter read

This (originally MAD WITH MUCH HEART)was the novel basis for ON DANGEROUS GROUND (RKO, 1951) a thrilling outdoor noir directed by Nicholas Ray with Robert Ryan, Ida Lupino, Ward Bond and a great Bernard Herman score.

Butler also wrote KISS THE BLOOD OFF MY HANDS, which was filmed with Burt Lancaster.
