I'm Sure You'll All Agree

The 25 Most Rewatchable Films

I don't sit down & rewatch favorites start to finish, but there are lots of films I'll stick with, or watch certain segments, if I come across them, flipping around (mainly on Turner). Halloween night for instance, I came across Bullitt, and of course stuck around for the car chase. Great caper films - Asphalt Jungle, Topkapi, The Killing, Rififi - I'll stay for the caper. Other favorites that I'm likely to watch to the end wherever I happen to tune in include Maltese Falcon, Big Sleep, His Girl Friday, White Heat, The Ladykillers (the original!), North By Northwest, Them, Yojimbo. Not a complete list by any means. Note nothing in common with the one on the site - OK, Godfather, maybe.

I can't argue with any of your choices.

Hell no, I don't agree. CASABLANCA #18, tied with Pretty Woman? Not in my world. I could barely sit through Forrest Gump once, let alone multiple times.

My list of things we actually rewatch:

Casablanca
When Harry Met Sally
Two for the Road
Animal House
Groundhog Day
Annie Hall
Princess Bride
Maltese Falcon
Independence Day (Jackie's favorite)
My Cousin Vinny

Those are 10. There are others.

North by Northwest is on my list too.

I've seen CASABLANCA too many times to count. Same with FALCON and THE BIG SLEEP. I must like Bogart. I like all the ones on your list, too.

Twelve Angry Men and The Hustler are two that I've gotten sucked into over and over.

Jackie said to add Love Actually. We watch it on Christmas.

1, 4, 9, 13, 18. If I got the numbers right. Most of them, for me, once was enough. Why isn't JAWS on there?

Am I missing something? The article is titled "The 25 Most Rewatchable Movies," but it only lists ten. What happened to 11 through 25?

The movies I will watch again and again:

Jaws

Close Encounters

Animal House

Moonstruck

Soap Dish

I'm sure there are others, but these are the ones I definitely won't switch off.

Oh, I see. There was another link to the original top 25 list.

SOAP DISH is great. It deserves an Overlooked Movies post from somebody.

The one I've watched more than any other film is STAR WARS Episode 4, the first one. CASABLANCA, the first Indiana Jones film, Jurassic Park, The Big Sleep. I don't understand the appeal of Groundhog Day.

Jeff Meyerson said...

Rick, we're going to watch STAR WARS before the new one opens.

Right, I forgot The Hustler - for the first match with Minnesota Fats. Also The Naked City, despite having to wince every time Barry Fitzgerald is onscreen - criminal miscasting! - but the views of 1948 Manhattan are fantastic. And Where Eagles Dare (for Burton's absurdly convoluted explanation of the plot) & Guns of Navarone, waiting for the elevator to trip the explosives.

Let's see..... There are some films I watch at least once a year:
HI-LIFE -- At Christmas
THE FATAL GLASS OF BEER
RIDE LONESOME
THE BODY SNATCHER (1945)
CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT -- New Year's Eve
REPEAT PERFORMANCE " " "
Olivier's HAMLET

But THE BIG SLEEP, THE THING, HIS GIRL FRIDAY, THE AWFUL TRUTH, DUCK SOUP and too many others to list get a look whenever they happen to be on.

Casablanca?
The Maltese Falcon?
Citizen Kane?
The Big Sleep?
The Hustler?
The Wild One?
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid?
Indiscreet?
Miracle on 34th Street?
Waiting for Guffman?

I could go on, but it's obvious that I live in an alternative universe.

Don,

Let me congratulate you on the proper use of "alternative" instead of the more common and completely unsuitable "alternate."

Robert Silverberg occasionally corrects people about that.
