There's a YouTube video somewhere with an earlier take of this song, and once it's done, John was obviously impressed and thought that was it. But Paul, who was a usually a nice guy but turned into a perfectionist Nazi on his own songs, wasn't satisfied, and they ended up recording the one that made it to vinyl.

I still remember my first time hearing "Hey Jude." I was still living in England, so late summer 1968. I was with my aunt, uncle, and cousins in their car. Radio One was on the radio. My uncle left the car running with the radio on while my aunt ran a quick errand; the DJ announced a new Beatles song was up next and my cousins and I waited in breathless anticipation. What I remember most was how long the song was: my aunt finished her errand and was back in the car before the song ended.

I saw Paul McCartney in concert probably 20 years ago (I know Linda was still alive and on-stage with him) and this was either the last so g of the set or the final encore. Either way, a great moment.

/No--I'm not crying...but it is dusty in here!
