When I was a kid I watched the Dukes every week. He was great as Roscoe, and his Twilight Zone was very creepy.

I remember him best two turns as Jim Lindsey, guitar player extraordinaire, from The Andy Griffith Show.

Of course, THE KILLER SHREWS is also a favorite "bad" film.

Somehow THE KILLER SHREWS failed to break him out as a major star.

Best was one of the great '50s Western character actors, able to play good guys and bad guys (the latter of whom usually seemed at least one brick shy of a load) with equal skill. Also, if I'm not mistaken, he was the leader of the home invaders who shoved William Devane's hand down a grinding sink disposal in John Flynn's ROLLING THUNDER.

And his character was "Texan."
