Wow, is John C. Wright really that good? I'd not even heard of him until this list.

Nor had I.

The only thing I've read by John C. Wright is the novella ONE BRIGHT STAR TO GUIDE THEM, which I thought was very good. I believe it was one of the stories nominated. I have some of his other books but haven't read them yet.

Apparently there's considerable controversy over this slate of nominees. I'm so far out of the loop in SF these days, that I know only one of the nominated writers.

A Tea Partyesque insurgent pair of bloc voting efforts have managed to have much of their way with the noms...I suspect largely because so few bother to nom .

Reading Todd's comment, my thought is it's too bad for the people who consider the list the best SF of the year, as opposed to the results of a political wrestling match.

Wright probably would have been wise to turn down some of those nominations. It's seldom a good thing to be competing against yourself.

Even when you're as established and widely read as, say, Silverberg was when running against himself, or the others in the past...sadly. Richard, measured judgement hasn't been much of a hallmark of such awards for some time, when ever too much in place.
