10 Classic Cons You'd Still Fall For

The "helping bank examiners detect fraud" con was so prevalent a few years back that police were asking banks to alert them if elderly customers (favorite con targets) wanted to withdraw large sums of money.

Last year, we kept getting calls from someone claiming that a helpful relative had ordered us a Life Alert (" Help, I've fallen and I can't get up") and all we had to pay was the "shipping charge" which they would charge to our credit card. They must have thought I was older than I am, but when I gave the caller a piece of my mind about the special place in Hell reserved for people who prey on the elderly, the phone calls stopped.

Good for you, Deb. Our policy is to screen all calls. If we don't know who's calling, we don't answer. We figure they'll leave a message if it's important.
