Soapbox time:
There is more than a little truth in many if not most of the early criticisms / deprecations of the works listed. Such truths mostly appear overstated nowadays due to a change of sensibilities that, to our "modern" minds, overwhelm earlier perceived truths.
Yes, yes, I know, but "Ulysses" still has got to be near the top of a list of the most over-rated novels of the 20th century!
The pragmatic criticism of Fred Astaire was, and is, wrong, but was almost exactly what Astaire apparently felt about himself!
