Same thing happened in Montreal back in the 80s.

This woman, apparently another Mensa candidate, decided it was better to ignore notices, rather than admit she lost the book.

As the notices piled up, and eventually the overdue fees, the case began to draw local attention. When she saw the ignorance card wasn't working, she tried the pity one, citing her status as a poor working single mother. And continued to ignore what were by then orders to appear in court.

They did eventually haul her ass off to jail, more for show than anything (she was sprung almost immediately), but it may have been the first time she actually paid attention to them.

I'm sorry, but anyone who cold shoulders so many official letters, notices and later, warrants and subpoenas probably is too frigging stupid and full of themselves to be allowed to roam free anyway.

I mean, ferhristssake, read your mail, stupid! Pick up the damn phone and straighten things out.

Aaaarrrggghh. Time for coffee.

Good thing Texas has a surfeit of that lethal injection drug.
