Once Again, Texas Leads the Way

Destructive ants marching on San Antonio | Latest News |
: "A destructive menace is heading west on I.H. 10 with San Antonio in its sites. It's the crazy Raspberry ant that was first spotted in Houston in 2002. No one knows where it came from or how to control it but it reproduces faster than any insect experts have ever seen.

'This is an alien species,' says Sam Houston State University Entomologist Dr. Jerry Cook. 'This is in higher densities than any other insects I've ever seen. They number in the billions and cover everything around them."

Where's Leiningen when you need him?

  2. Jerry, I wonder how many of us will get that comment. I remember hearing at least one version of that story on radio, and I saw the movie version with Charlton Heston. But I'm an old guy.

It's a much better as a radio show. Makes me glad the only thing we have to worry about in WA state is yellow jackets.

  4. As if they aren't bad enough in the economy size, pray to God some of them don't wander over to the Cosmic Ray Station on Sulfur Mtn. and emerge as giAnts.

I wonder if "the crazy Raspberry ant" is the actual scientific name?

As I recall, "Leningen vs the Ants" was in my 9th or 10th grade literature text.

  5. That was clearly a lot better text than I ever had when I was a kid.

  6. As the king of typos I shouldn't mention they used "sites" instead of "sights," but I can't resist.

All I can say is, "Quick, Watson, the Flit!"

Fred, it was in my 7th grade English book.

  8. Cap'n Bob: They're TV people, so you shouldn't expect too much.

Jerry: You and Fred both had better textbooks than I did.

Didn't Crazy Rasberry Ants open for Jimi Hendrix?

Don't think it's a good time to take your tailer out to camp in the desert, especially with a few bags of sugar in it...

But, please, maybe THIS time we can keep the things away from L.A.??

  11. They'll come there only if there's a movie involved.
